Hobart based Julian Cook, AM.AIRAH, is has been appointed president of AIRAH’s Tasmanian division committee.

Ecolibrium: How are you finding sitting in the president’s chair?
Julian: Good so far, At first I was nervous about taking on the responsibility, probably partially due to my age; however, the rest of the Tasmanian committee and AIRAH member services officer Judy Armstrong have been excellent support.
Eco:Â What do you enjoy about it, and what are the challenges?
Julian:Â The thing I enjoy the most is the ability to contribute to the monthly AIRAH seminar nights, and ultimately, although in a small way, playing a part in shaping our industry.
The challenges so far have largely been around identifying what training is most necessary (Refrigeration changes, AS5149 and Fire Penetrations have been three big topics). AIRAH Tasmania has a high portion of contractors relative to consultants/engineers, so our needs are naturally different to some other states.
The other challenge has been looking for new ways to engage new members, especially in the 20-35 year-old age bracket, including engineering students.
This is a national focus, so conveniently I’m not alone on this one.
Eco:Â Thoughts on the recent AIRAH convention?
Julian:Â Encouraging and inspiring. Again, I was a bit nervous at first, having never been to one, but the team were all very welcoming. It was an excellent experience being able to meet with national leaders from our industry and discuss where our industry has been, what’s changed and where it is headed. I must say I am excited about what’s coming in the online resources and training, and member value/engagement spaces.
